Las Vegas History Series - Monte Carlo Hotel & Casino
The Monte Carlo Hotel & Casino

The Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino opened to the public on June 21, 1996.  The Monte Carlo was originally known as the "Grand Victoria" and its architecture and interior design reminiscent of the Belle Epoque period of European design.  Before the Monte Carlo opened the initial name was shortened to just "Victoria" and then changed entirely to Monte Carlo.

On the morning of January 25, 2008 a three-alarm fire was reported on the exterior of the top six floors and roof of the casino. Portions of the hotel facade's exterior burned with some debris falling off and starting smaller secondary fires on ledges below. The fire was fully contained an hour after it began. Although it was an exterior fire, although there was water damage to parts of several floors.  The fire caused the hotel to close for almost a month and it was not until the middle of February, 2008 that the hotel was able to reopen for guests.

In early 2015 it was announced by MGM Resorts International, the owners of the Monte Carlo, that the Monte Carlo would go through a major re-branding and transformation.  In June of 2016 MGM Resorts International released the details of the upcoming $450 million dollar transformation. Gone will be the single Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino and in its place there will be two separate hotels. The main hotel will be named the Park MGM Hotel and the second portion will be named the NoMad Las Vegas.

Las Vegas locals and guests alike are looking forward to seeing what the end results of the transformation will be and as sorry as people are to see the Monte Carlo fade away, the prospect of something new and exciting offers new life to this property.
