Construction of the New York New York Hotel & Casino began in March of 1995, construction of the hotel was completed two years later and the casino opened on January 3, 1997 at a cost of $460 million dollars.
The casino is based on the idealized skyline of New York City in the 1940's with the Chrysler Tower and the Empire State Building being prominently featured in the facade and a 150-foot-tall replica of the Statue of Liberty in the front of the hotel.
After the September 11 people spontaneously sent tributes and memorials to the New York-New York, especially T-shots from police departments, fire departments and other first responders from around the country and in some case different countries. These were displayed in a memorial on the property until 2013.
Within the property gaming areas meeting rooms and other locations are named after actual New York City neighborhoods and/or landmarks. In the casino special decks of playing cards are used where the hearts suit has been replaced by apples.
