Casino Chips from the Caribbean

Beyond Las Vegas, the state of Nevada and the United States, there are a lot of casinos all over the world. Today, when people think of casinos and the Caribbean, they may very well think about Atlantis Resort that’s located in the Bahamas. The casino is 50,000 square feet. However, there are resorts in St. Maarten, Curacao, St. Kitts, Aruba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

In this week’s newsletter/blog, we are going to focus on chips from Caribbean casinos. All of the chips mentioned below are available for purchase on our website or Ebay. Here are three closed casinos with different stories.

The Hotel Capri Casino in Cuba:

This one has an interesting story as these chips are from the 1950s. The Hotel opened in 1957 and had casino gaming up to 1960 when the Cuban government nationalized it. It had 250 rooms, 19 stories and was one of the largest resorts at the time in Cuba. The owner of the operation was a mobster by the name of Santo Trafficante, Jr. The hotel was designed by Jose Canaves. See some of the chips below from the Havana Casino. As always, click the picture to purchase from Ebay.

 El Conquistador in Puerto Rico:

The casino closed in 2012. Reading online, there are claims that because of a high number of illegal gaming venues in Puerto Rico, it made it hard for legitimate operations to compete. Tourists say the resort is great, but the casino not being in there created a vacant area. It was located in the small town of Fajardo. According to one article, the casino had over 200 machines and six table games. You can own some of the chips below by clicking the different pictures from Ebay:

King International in Aruba:

This Holiday Inn Resort was opened from 1972 to 1985. There were table games that included baccarat. It was located at Jancho Enrique Irausquin Boulevard 230 in Palm Beach, Aruba. This casino had coin inlay chips, hot stamp gold foil, and your standard inlay casino chips. Decks of King International Casino cards were red and white. Hours of operation were from 10:00 AM to 5:00 AM. Not Vegas 24/7, but pretty close. After the King International, the casino became the Grand Holiday and is now the Excelsior.

You can buy an entire set of the chips from that casino we have on Ebay clicking that picture below or you can click the second picture to buy a variety of individual chips on our website.

Additionally, all chips can be purchased individually on our website clicking here from those three places.

What I learned this week is that international chips have stories that are just as interesting as ones from casinos in Nevada and the United States in general.
