Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, might have "left the building," however his connection with Las Vegas lives on. Few people recall his less than successful first performances at the New Frontier Hotel in 1956. His performance at the time was panned as being "a show for teenagers...for the average Vegas spender a bore."  It didn't help that he and his band were more interested in spending their downtime at the bar and not on the casino floor.  After 29 performances his show closed and he was soon after drafted into the U.S. Army. Thirteen years later he returned to Las Vegas like a whirlwind. He had a highly successful run at the International Hotel, which became the Hilton Hotel midway through his residency, from 1969 to 1976.  During this time period he performed 837 sold out shows, sometimes two or three a night. While he is often credited with performing at the Sahara Hotel and Casino these performances actually took place at the Sahara Hotel in Lake Tahoe. Even though Elvis died in 1977 his legend lives on in Las Vegas.  Elvis impersonators are a common sight on the Las Vegas strip and the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino, the former Hilton Hotel, boasts the only permanent Elvis exhibition outside of Graceland.
