Las Vegas History Series - Fremont Hotel
The Fremont Hotel

Last week, on May 18th 2016, the Fremont Hotel celebrated its 60th Anniversary.

Designed by architect Wayne McAllister when the Fremont Hotel opened its doors in 1956 it was the tallest building in the state of Nevada.  The Fremont was built for a cost of $6 million ($53 million in today's dollars) and at the time of its opening it had 155 rooms.

In 1959 a young Wayne Newton, 18 at the time, made his very first appearance in Las Vegas at the Fremont Hotel in its Carnival Lounge.

In 1963 the Fremont added the 14 story Ogden tower and one of the city's first vertical parking lots.

The Fremont Hotel is one of the casinos currently located in the Fremont Street Experience and is located on what is commonly called the 'Four Corners.'  This is the intersection of Fremont Street and Casino Central Blvd and includes the Fremont Hotel, the 4 Queens, the Golden Nugget and Binion's Gambling Hall and Hotel.  These four casinos are often though of as the "anchor" of Fremont Street.

The Fremont Hotel also had featured in major motion pictures.  The Fremont was featured in the 1992 Disney Picture Honey, I Blew Up the Kids and scenes from the 1996 movie Swingers were filmed in the Fremont Hotel.
