Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas
One of the most well known Las Vegas landmarks is the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign located on the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip. This 25 foot tall sign was designed in 1959 by Nevada resident Betty Willis and installed soon after by the Western Neon. The sign was never copyrighted and today it is in the public domain because Ms. Willis considered the sign to be her gift to the city and wanted it to be in the public domain.
Officially the sign is in the town of Paradise, Nevada, about four miles from the city limit of Las Vegas; a fact generally ignored by tourist and locals alike. In 2002 the City of Las Vegas City Council elected to erect a second sign reading "Welcome to Fabulous Downtown Las Vegas" just inside the city limits of Las Vegas proper. In 2007 a third sign was installed on Boulder Highway, like the original sign this sign also is not in the city limits of Las Vegas but is as the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Bureau called the "gateway from Boulder Highway to Las Vegas."
In March of 2009 the original sign was listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. National Park Service and in 2013 on the State Historic Preservation Office for the State of Nevada announced that the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign had been added to the State Register of Historic Places.
